It’s not just about sewing

These old Singer cabinets have been enjoying increasing popularity with people who have an artistic soul and the creative vision to re-purpose the fine cabinetry and ironwork that went into their manufacture. In these times of mass-produced furniture from engineered wood and indestructible plastic that end up in landfills and oceanic flotsam, it’s amazing to take a close look at one of these.

My earliest memory of my mother’s sewing machine is of me climbing onto the foot-pedal and imagining that the drive-wheel was the steering wheel on my sailing ship and I was on the high seas, plunging headlong into my next adventure.

More recently, I’ve used them as stands for a variety of table tops – a desk, a bathroom vanity, and a small woodworking bench.
